Viduje — 2024–present Motherhood is one of the most significant transitions a person goes through and one of the most commercially distorted. The market is crowded with unnecessary things while the mother herself disappears from the picture. Viduje started from a simple act of recentring: what does she actually need? The answer shaped everything, careful curation focused on real comfort, function, emotional sensitivity and material honesty. A tone that reflects the full complexity of early motherhood. Partnerships with makers whose values aligned. And underneath it all, a genuine attempt to learn how commerce works, how to build trust, create partnerships and grow something slowly and sustainably. Currant — 2016–2019 Currant grew from years of watching the fashion industry and asking a simple, uncomfortable question: what if a garment was designed from the start to return to the earth? Not recycled, not "less bad", but actually compostable. Every material decision followed that logic. Natural fibres, plant and mineral dyes, no synthetic components, nothing that couldn't biodegrade safely. Garments were made to order in Lithuania, working with local artisans, using materials from Europe and Japan. The business model was circular by design with the idea, that items could be returned and given a different form of life again until being composted. It was also, quietly an art project. The work lived between clothing and object, between craft knowledge and conceptual design. It asked whether tenderness and humanity could be embedded in the way something is made, not just in how it looks. Random / Bits and Pieces / Ready-to-be-hung — 2011–2016 Starting from patchwork - one of the oldest pattern-making traditions - I began asking what a contemporary version might look like if spontaneity replaced planning. Working with a programmer, we built a pattern generator in Processing that places basic geometric forms randomly within a grid, producing combinations that can never be exactly repeated. The question became: what happens when you remove intention from design? The program generated; I selected, deconstructed and made. Each garment carried a unique code guaranteeing it existed only once. The same system fed tapestry weavings made by hand - slow, time-consuming, tactile and placed deliberately in tension with the speed of digital image-making. The project grew into a creative lab exploring that friction: fast and slow, digital and handmade, flat and tactile, mass-produced and one-of-a-kind. I think and I make. My background moves across fine art, fashion and textiles, product development, brand creative direction and over the years I've learned that the wide range is exactly where I feel at home. (1) “Place, “home”, is that which offers a grid for identity, not merely a spatial-temporal location which individuates, but a broad cultural milieu that frames out identities.” (2) What happens if there is no common ground? What does it mean to be removed from one’s culture and live as the other? How does such experience shape us as humans in a longer perspective? Topics like place and time, home and displacement, belonging and identity are important in my work. I am interested in the importance of location in relation to cultural identity. By exploring how art can talk about cultural and historical identity today, I try to offer ways of seeing the past, present and future, rather than to give knowledge of the way things were or are. A state of wandering is an installation of objects resulting from a journey – a “process of self-knowledge and identity formation that involved a constant possibility and risk of being lost” in the other. It is a story told through wearables and objects made in harmony with nature. Carefully chosen materials and all parts of the garments are natural and biodegradable. They are either non-dyed, in their natural shades or dyed with plants, earth or mineral pigments. I could not hear a thing. And I didn’t know why, nor do I know now. Truthfully, at that moment it did not matter at all. All senses seemed mute. Well… not all of them, but most. I guess I should have felt pain also, but I didn’t. What I felt was ease, I felt caressed. As I couldn’t tilt my head to any side, I had no choice, but to stare at the sky and tree tops. My rational self was numb. I just observed lingering pine trees for hours that seemed like days and maybe months, eventually I lost track of time.The only discomfort I felt was in my eyes. I blinked rarely, if at all. Moist dried up quickly. That day sun was so incredibly bright. There were no clouds to be seen coming to my rescue. Clearest ever, baby blue sky at that moment seemed like the cruelest creature. At some point I must have fallen asleep. Slept it through. I guess drifting away for a minute was my temporal salvage. I am still doubtful about later witnessing starry night. It could simply have been my damaged iris echoing sunlight glimmers. Breeze gradually started covering me up in snow. With occasional sand, dirt, pine spits, feathers, animal hair and other near-by forest blessings, I agreed to be wrapped, I agreed to be taken care of. My sight was hazy and painful, yet I felt good, I believe I even started feeling my pinky moving, breasts tickling, wet cold on thighs and possibly deeper breaths. If I actually could move. If only I could help these winds do their job quicker. I knew it wasn’t up for me to agree or disagree, the only way out was surrender. I murmured things, though can’t recall exactly what, some stolen whispers, cracking voice sounds. My lips were dry. I was covered now in snow completely. I eased in to inevitable defeat, but I still felt caressed, I felt ease. White darkness embraced every inch of my skin. I was happy. Sudden heat wave rushed through my body. Like a flashlight accidentally turning on and off because of battery glitch. I knew I was gone, yet I felt most alive I have ever been. Luckily my best friend Lilly came. I was not alone anymore, but I did not feel alone being just by myself either. I have no idea how she managed to pull me in even deeper into the ground. She said she weaved a shelter for us. She said that I will be alright, but I was good already.We talked, I liked listening her stories, sorrows and cheerful giggles. Mine followed too. And when conversation would stop, I’d entwine another memory braid and things would carry on. Truthfully, I was not defeated. I am dressed in courage. I am free, I am myself and as my last bits and pieces of self were being scattered away, I knew I was home. I am actually alright. https://linabartkute.com/RANDOM Random Random is an experimental pattern design project which grew up from thinking about an old and through centuries unchanged crafting technique - patchwork. By looking at classical principals of pattern design process for patchwork-making, I found that most of the time it involves basic geometrical forms, mathematical precision, repetition, symmetry and careful planning.By asking myself how a contemporary patchwork could look like today, I tried to rethink those principals and involve some spontaneity and playfulness to the process of pattern design.Pattern generator built using Processing programming language is a tool which makes accidental geometrical form and colour combinations involving randomness, therefore an element of suprise to the design process.Fabrics used for garments are various jersey bits from upcycled second-hand T-shirts. Our first idea was to make an application which generates patterns that never repeat themselves. Each pattern created from randomness therefore is unique and the only one. Computer program built by using processing programming language catches and illustrates a unique moment that can never be recreated and the process is infinite. One-of-a-kind patterns materialized on T-shirts and sweatshirts. Direct garment printing enabled us to reduce quantity to 1, therefore each pattern exists only on one size garment and has a code to guarantee uniqueness. “The Function of the Studio” is the text by Daniel Buren written in 70’s – still relevant today. He talks about the relationship between studio and museum/gallery and why artist’s studios are usually white, neutralized, cubic spaces. This is because they characterize the museum or gallery of then/today, so artists are able to create art pieces without thinking much whether their art would fit in a gallery or museum space. “By producing for a stereotype, one ends up of course fabricating a stereotype”, – says Daniel. Doesn’t that sound a sort of production? Moreover, Jorunn Veiteberg in an article about contemporary crafts says that “globalization has led more and more artists to make their art in collaboration with craftsmen in China.” Ex: Ai WeiWei’s “Sunflower seeds”. Artists more and more have their own “laboratories” with employees. Ex: Olafur Eliasson and many more. The art fastness and the production of art in today’s art world is the problem which interests me. Is this Produced Art still can be called Art? My project was about artist’s relation to his artwork. Using time consuming textile technique – tapestry weaving – I make kaleidoscopic miniature images which are randomly generated by computer program. By playing with opposites – fastness and slowness, digital and handmade, synthetic and natural, flat and tactile, perfect and imperfect, still and alive, I am questioning, – what is more important? He talks about the relationship between studio and museum/gallery and why artist’s studios are usually white, neutralized, cubic spaces. This is because they characterize the museum or gallery of then/today, so artists are able to create art pieces without thinking much whether their art would fit in a gallery or museum space. “By producing for a stereotype, one ends up of course fabricating a stereotype”, – says Daniel. Artists more and more have their own “laboratories” with employees. Ex: Olafur Eliasson and many more.
